Working with Your Grant Consultant for Campaign Success

imageWhen working on a fundraising or capital campaign, don’t overlook the value that a grant consultant can provide – from identifying prospects to delivering a polished proposal to crafting reports on campaign progress.

Identifying prospects

Identifying prospects is the job of everyone working on the campaign, but the grant consultant is particularly helpful in sourcing local, regional and national foundation prospects. Working with a database that holds tens of thousands of foundation records, the grant consultant can search by keywords to find those funders most suited to the project. This means working with you to identify keywords to describe the program or project to be funded.

Crafting the grant proposal

A grant consultant can be invaluable in producing proposals, because the process of grant seeking is so time-consuming. If you don’t have a grant writer on board, a grant consultant can step in and serve as your “voice.” This takes preparation, but the end result is worth it – a proposal that, with some tailoring, can be used as a source document over the course of your client’s campaign.

The grant consultant can create a wide range of documents, including proposal narratives, project budgets, outcome measurements and strategic plans. If a grant maker should unexpectedly ask for an executive summary of a proposal, the grant consultant can supply one in short order. “Evaluation” is a buzzword in today’s nonprofit world, and the grant consultant can help you come up with program evaluation measurements that will impress grant makers.

Keeping up with grant makers

Communication with the grant maker does not end with the grant award. Over the course of your campaign there are many opportunities to send updates to let donors (and your grant maker is a donor!) know of major events – a groundbreaking, another major award, a program milestone. A funder may also require grant reports to be submitted periodically. The grant consultant can help with any or all of these needs.

It takes time for you to do your job. The grant consultant can take complicated tasks and run with them, giving you more time to ply your talents and create successes in other areas. You will wonder how you ever got along without a grant consultant on your team.
