The life of a fundraising professional can be rich in tangible rewards and certainly in intangible ones: the satisfaction of a job well done, working with others toward a goal, and knowing that your efforts have made the world a better place.
At the same time, fundraising is a demanding profession. For a variety of reasons, fundraisers can find themselves stressed and less than fulfilled. Here are some questions to ask when considering what fundraising position fits you best:
Is this position the right one for me?
Compensation and benefits are just part of the equation. What do you care about most? Does the organization's work matter? Beyond these basic issues, ask yourself if this is an environment where you can do good work and be recognized.
Am I the right person for the job?
Not only does the job need to serve your needs, but you also need to be passionate about what you're doing in order to give your best to the organization. Ask, "Can I be passionate about my work?" "Are the values of the organization in line with my own?" "Do I truly believe that the organization's work is important?" "Can I make a difference here?" If you cannot answer yes to these questions, you might not be the right person for the job.
Can I align myself with this job?
Occasionally, you may run into a situation where a job is a good fit for you, and you are the right person for the job, but you are still experiencing conflicts and problems. Ask, "Are the same problems reoccurring over time?" "Is it a persistent problem?" "Can the administrative focus of the organization be changed?" "Can I change myself or my behavior to address problems and increase satisfaction?"
If you find yourself unable to resolve reoccurring problems, it may be time to move on. Be willing to ask the tough questions, so you can be confident in the work you do as well as with the organization you serve.
