Here are some examples of websites that I have built for clients or have ported to WordPress. Picking the right theme for a website is an interactive process with the client. My themes of choice are some full-featured, configurable, well-supported, free themes like Weaver, Suffusion, and Atahualpa. I also will use premium, commercial themes if they provide substantial benefit for the client.

Theme: Suffusion

The BeingElmo site used during the film festival roll-out was originally designed by a firm in LA in preparation for the Sundance Film Festival using custom hand-coded html and CSS. - I have taken their design and re-implemented it using standard WordPress themes and plugins to extend the functionality and make it easier to maintain. Now the film is in production and the WordPress site has been replaced by a custom html site.

I'm testing a new hosting service wpengine.com. The company specializes in optimized WordPress. Experimenting with my site and some of my clients' I find that page load times drop from shared hosting providers like Bluehost that load in the range of 1.5 to 3+ seconds, down to sub-1 second loads when I load them on wpengine. I'm still testing, but considering moving most of my clients to this provider.
