Growing Philanthropy for Boy Scouts of America
Hartsook has a decades-long tradition of helping Boy Scouts of America (BSA) councils – with over $166 million raised for BSA. The Hartsook team helps improve councils’ major gift prospect identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation; grant research and proposal writing; campaign assessments; estate giving; annual fund planning and implementation; leadership development and more. A Scout is Trustworthy
Trustworthy: Worthy, dependable; able to be relied on as honest and truthful.
Like the Scouts and Scouters we serve, Hartsook places a high value on being dependable. For over 30 years, nonprofits of all sizes and sectors have relied on Hartsook, including Scouting councils from coast to coast, in urban cities and rural communities to help them raise billions of dollars. Now, that’s being dependable.
Make 2020 Your Council’s Best Year of Fundraising
The first quarter of each year is the right time for council and district campaign leadership to initiate their fundraising plans for the year. Starting off the year strong will help drive momentum to help reach your goals. This is extremely important as it sets the tone for what will become the entire year’s revenue for capital projects, programs, operating and endowment funding.
As important as this is, consistent reports and communication derived from campaign success are just as vital. As Hartsook consultants are known to say, “Good communication demonstrates appreciation.”
Methodically sharing these financial reports with a wider audience shows authenticity, transparency and accountability. These intentional acts invite peripheral bystanders to become more active participants in the council’s and district’s overall mission. From there, prospective donor cultivation can begin!
Especially as it relates to potential signature events – distinguished citizen award dinners and volunteer recognition – these annual fundraising plans should be part of a comprehensive approach to fundraising.
One excellent tool to use is the widely-adopted Cox Event Grid featured in the textbook Fundraising Practices and Practices, Hartsook President and Co-Founder, Karin Cox.

Crater Lake Council Extends Its Campaign Counsel with Hartsook in 2020
Crater Lake Council (Central Point, Oreg.) first retained Hartsook to help guide its fundraising efforts. Its former Scout Executive, Kevin Patterson had this to say: “Hartsook’s devotion to walking with us keeps us motivated to do the necessary tasks to achieve the goals we set.” In 2020, Crater Lake Council has extended its arrangement with Hartsook to continue providing professional fundraising council.
“I was at the library near my home on a recent Saturday morning wrapping up loose ends before a week on the road. I often tuck into my local branch on weekends to thin my briefcase.
I looked up from my computer and saw a man walking slowly through the lobby toward the restrooms and water fountain.
As he got closer, it was evident from the pack and bedroll on his back that he was homeless and had come in for a drink after a long night outdoors. I watched him as he approached the water fountain, only to feel disappointment as he leaned over and pushed the button. It wasn’t working. Before I could get up, a young man sprung from his reading chair and walked quickly toward the man at the fountain. What I witnessed warmed my heart…” Go here to read more.
