Brave is not reckless or unwise. Bravery does not mean the absence of fear. One may be brave – moving forward with resolve and determination – and still be unsure of the unknown. To be brave may mean looking fear in the face, staring it down and still staying on course.


Scouting Builds Positive Character

According to Tuft University’s Character and Merit Project (CAMP) study, the more time kids spend in Scouting, the better the outcomes in character development. Those who attend meetings regularly report higher outcomes virtually across the board when compared to Scouts with lower attendance. QUESTION: Should donors have a lot of input in how their gift is used and dispersed?

Donors should feel free to leave no stones unturned about how they want their money used. Misunderstandings between donors and nonprofits are occurring more frequently. To the degree organizations feel entitled, they neglect donor intent. Short-sightedness or a lack of creativity have led to many a fundraising failure. Donors give for a variety of reasons and in a variety of ways. It’s important for the fundraising community to be reminded: It’s the donor’s money! Money flows to where it’s appreciated. Large gifts may require institutions to stretch their imaginations and think out of the box to accept some gifts. Otherwise, they should expect gifts to flow elsewhere.

Kinetic Executive Vice President Norma Murphy was formerly Vice President of Development for the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation of Kansas. She also was Development Director for Rainbows United of Wichita, a preschool for children with disabilities, where she completed the organization’s first capital campaign six months ahead of schedule and 10 percent over goal. Norma serves on a national committee for the American Association of Grant Professionals, and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, where she was named the 2004 Outstanding Fundraising Professional of the Year and Kinetic’s Outstanding Fundraising Consultant in 2005. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University.
