Kinetic President and CEO Receives Boy Scouts of America District Award of Merit

Beem recently received the District Award of Merit from Blue Elk District, Heart of America Council – the highest district honor awarded a Scouting volunteer. Matt is an Eagle Scout, a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of America. He has served as Chair for the Heart of America Council’s Blue Elk District and in many other council, district and unit leadership roles. QUESTION: We have some experience with grant writing, but we could do better. Any tips? If you really need to jump start your grantmaking process, it might be a good time to enlist a professional, but here’s an idea to get things rolling. Too many nonprofits miss out on grants, because they take a narrow view of their mission. For example, a camp may look for foundations that give to camps, but those will be few and far between. What about submitting proposals to foundations that give to youth (since the camp provides opportunities for youth) or to environmental causes (since the camp provides services that help to sustain local wildlife) or to education (since the camp provides educational programs for campers), etc. Consider how lives are changed by your organization. For example, museums may research foundations that support a particular sector (art, history, science, etc.), but what about youth or education based on the benefits of a museum’s after-school programs offered? What about the economic boost it provides to the community as a destination spot? Don’t miss out on potential grant funding. Think big. Be creative. Expand your horizons, and cast a wider net. |

Get to Know the Kinetic Team
Prior to joining Kinetic, Geoff Burns founded a consulting company specializing in nonprofit structure, operations and startups. He also co-founded an international organization dedicated to keeping waterways safe and clean for paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts. Geoff brings a long history of community service, religious philanthropy and environmental stewardship to the Kinetic team. Many of these skills were developed as Executive Director for a retreat center known for its stunning setting, educational programs and adult retreat. Geoff has helped secure several million dollars for clients in leadership, education, and conservation industries. He also provides invaluable strategic insight into the fundraising process. Geoff has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Valparaiso University and an MBA from Salem International University. He is working on his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management with Capella University. |
