A Scout is Loyal
Loyal: Steadfast, dedicated, constant and true. One who is loyal will not say yes when no is necessary. Loyal does not mean always agreeing. Clear communication is of higher value than self-interest or disingenuous “agreement.” Above all, Kinetic is loyal to its clients because our mission is to help our clients fully realize their mission. |

Kinetic President and CEO Matthew J. Beem Earns Ph.D.
(Kansas City) Matt Beem has earned a doctor of philosophy in organizational behavior and higher education administration from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. He defended his dissertation, Performance-Based Fundraiser Compensation: An Analysis of Preference, Prevalence and Effect, in December 2018. The Fundraiser Compensation Survey, an original study, was emailed by the Mid-America Chapter of Fundraising Professionals to more than 3,000 individuals. Beem’s dissertation sheds light on the effect performance-based compensation has on the amount of money fundraisers raise. (Pictured: Dr. David Renz, Director, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Doctoral Advisor to Dr. Matt Beem) Matt is an Eagle Scout, a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, and an active volunteer with Boy Scouts of America. Ask Kinetic!
Do you have a tough fundraising question? Send your questions to askhartsook@kineticfundraising.com and we will respond by email. Your question may be featured in a future eHartsook on Scouting. QUESTION: Any tips on how to manage a database well? In this day and age of speedy and reasonably priced technology, there’s no excuse for nonprofits to ignore or procrastinate the important task of database clean ups. Here are just a few basics: Make sure to update your donors’ employment information, as well as their contact numbers. Purge duplicated data and delete inactive information. With so much information available online, this is not difficult to do – particularly for your major donors’ list. Segment your data, so you can run reports on high-potential supporters including volunteers, corporate supporters, etc. Make sure giving records are up to date and uniform. Ensure that all the values have been entered for insider information such as interests, concerns, the last date a person was solicited for a gift, etc. Do you have database policies in place? Are there standards established for data entry? This is an important starting place. There’s no perfect standard for data entry, but consistency is imperative. |

Strategies for Success: When Is the Right time for a Major Gift Campaign?
One of the questions we are often asked is this: “How do you know when it’s the right time for a major gift campaign?” The simple answer is: “If the nonprofit needs money, it’s the right time to raise major gifts.” However, needing money does not guarantee that you will raise major gifts. That takes intentionality. Asking the right questions will help predict your nonprofit’s ability to complete a successful major gift campaign. Go here to read more. |
