Timeless Wisdom for Scoutmasters from Baden-Powell

Success in training depends largely on the Scoutmaster’s own personal example. The Scoutmaster teaches Scouts through participation. Training is accomplished through involvement: When you want a thing done, ‘Don’t do it yourself’ is a good motto for Scoutmasters. The object of the patrol method is not so much saving the Scoutmaster trouble as giving responsibility to Scouts. The more responsibility the Scoutmaster gives patrol leaders, the more they will respond. The most important object in Boy Scout training is to educate, not to instruct.

QUESTION: How can we encourage regular gift donors to give more in line with what we know to be their capacity to give?

Start with listening to what the prospect cares about rather than focusing on the organization’s needs. What are the changes they passionately seek to make? How do those passions align with the mission of the organization you serve? It is your job to listen for the right opportunity and make that connection. Next, build the relationship before you ask for a gift. Could the prospect’s involvement with the organization advance the goals each of you have in mind? Once you have made a strong connection between the donor’s passion and the way your organization is addressing that concern, use research-based information to ask for a gift that reflects their true capacity to give.

Director of Support Services Tammy Weinman is the first point of contact for clients, prospects and consultants. Her commitment to client service creates a culture of excellence for everyone. Her son, Logan, is a Cub Scout, and her husband, Jeremy, is an assistant den leader. For several years, Tammy has been the Committee Chair for Pack 3692.  Tammy is a graduate of Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Business Management and a minor in Entrepreneurship.
