Kansas City Foundation Provides Access to Medical Care at Home and Abroad World Outreach Foundation (Kansas City) has retained Kinetic to conduct a Development Operation Review. The organization, founded in 2005 by Drs. Tony and Luz Racela, is dedicated to making a sustainable, long-term and life-changing difference in the lives of those without regular access to medical care through an innovative provision of healthcare services. World Outreach Foundation provides access to medical care in developing countries, particularly in the Philippines and Dominican Republic. It also offers health and dental care domestically to help break the cycle of homelessness in Kansas City. |

$43-million Gift Passes to Washington, D.C. Think Tank The Heritage Foundation (Washington, D.C.) has announced a $43-million legacy gift. Retired Associate Justice of The California Court of Appeal Judge Allison Rouse and his wife, attorney Dorothy Rouse, were long-time donors to the Heritage Foundation. They had also included the organization in their estate. The Rouses were donors for over twenty years. Following the passing of Judge Allison in 2005 and Dorothy this year, their bequest of will transfer from their estate to the Heritage Foundation. This gift of great significant represents the largest in the think tank’s 45-year history. |

Oklahoma Nonprofit Celebrates a Century of Service Tulsa Boys’ Home (Tulsa, Okla.) is celebrating its Centennial (1918-2018) – 100 years of providing hope and healing for Oklahoma boys. The mission of Tulsa Boys’ Home is to provide the highest quality residential care for boys needing placement outside their home, for the purpose of developing well-adjusted, responsible adults and strengthening the family. Tulsa Boys’ Home was the first and remains the largest residential treatment facility serving troubled boys in Oklahoma. |

Wichita State University Builds New Home for Its School of Business Wichita State University (Wichita, Kan.) is constructing a new, high-tech facility to house the W. Frank Barton School of Business. The cost will be around $50 million. The new, 136,000-square-foot building will be designed and configured to foster creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial expression. |

QUESTION: We developed a comprehensive strategic plan last year, but we’ve had trouble keeping to the timeline. Any tips? If it’s one of the first years you’ve developed a comprehensive strategic plan, don’t be discouraged and definitely don’t hesitate to do it again next year, even if you’ve missed some of your targets. It takes time to get a new system up and running, but it will be worth the time and effort. A few things to consider: Were the right people at the table when the plan was developed? It’s easier to get buy-in on new systems if those involved feel they had a say in the plan. Another big time-turnaround strategy is to take a counterintuitive approach to project management: If you’re in a hurry and have a tight timeline, slow down. If you have a window of disposable time, hurry up. It comes more naturally to ebb and flow based on the tyranny of the urgent, but time will be lost in the long run. Slow down and hurry up intentionally rather than instinctively. Whether you’re planning an event or overseeing a capital campaign, slow down when you feel pressured; and hurry up when you have time to spare. |

Get to Know the Kinetic Team Executive Vice President Lou Gehring was Senior Executive Director of The Shawnee Mission Medical Center Foundation from 2003 until joining Kinetic. In 2005, he launched the Foundation’s largest-ever capital campaign, raising over $30 million, followed by a successful $11-million campaign. Lou raised over $80 million during his tenure at The Shawnee Mission Medical Center Foundation. He served as President of AFP Kansas City Chapter and was chair of the Professional Advancement subcommittee of the AFP Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2000. In 2009, Lou was honored as the Outstanding Fundraising Professional of the Year in Kansas City by the Mid America Chapter of AFP. In 2010 Lou was given the annual Community Service Award by Shawnee Mission Medical Center. In 2017, Ingram’s Magazine named him one of 50 Kansans You Should Know. Lou holds a Master of Music degree from Southern Methodist University; an undergraduate degree from Loyola University New Orleans; and a performance certificate from El Estudio de Arte Guitarristico in Mexico City, DF, Mexico. |
