Identification, Death and Bequest Giving

In their article in Psychology and Marketing, “Bequest Giving: Revisiting Donor Motivation with Dimensional Qualitative,” Adrian Sargeant and Jen Shang of the Kinetic Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy consider the impact of bequest giving. Although bequests account for just 8% of total voluntary income, this figure belies their enhanced significance for many organizations. Mann and Sharpe (2004), for example, remind us that it is not unusual for organizations with well-established bequest programs to receive upwards of 30% of their philanthropic support in this form. Ask Kinetic!

Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to askhartsook@kineticfundraising.com. We will respond by email and your question may be featured in a future Philanthropy Success.

QUESTION: Our board doesn’t understand why we would hire an outside fundraising consultant when we already have a development department? What would you recommend we tell them?

Just because a nonprofit has a development department doesn’t mean it has successfully undertaken an integrated campaign that raises capital, regular giving and endowment. In contrast, Kinetic has been doing this successfully for over 30 years. We bring a team of professionals with expertise in helping nonprofits of every size and sector… 6,000 nonprofits that have built approximately 40,000 facilities and raised over $231 billion. Our firm doesn’t just talk about saving the world, we are helping to do it. We have built our business on ensuring our clients succeed. The right strategies and advice, applied appropriately, result in greater giving. Tell your board it’s time to call in the experts and tell them to remember: When a fundraising firm offers to help raise money “for less,” be advised that the “less” could mean: “raising less money.”
