Policy Organization in Washington, D.C. Retains Hartsook to Support the Nonprofit’s Mission

Hartsook was hired to conduct a strategic development assessment for long-time client, The Heritage Foundation (Washington, D.C.). Heritage President Kay Coles James leads the organization in fulfilling its mission to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values and a strong national defense. Kinetic supports this long-time client in its vision: Building an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society flourish.

Kansas City Boy Scouts of America Council Retains Hartsook for Another Campaign

Heart of America Council, Boy Scouts of America (Kansas City) has retained Kinetic to help support its fundraising goals including its camp renewal projects. The Council recognizes that to attract Scouts to camp, they must continue to make maintenance and upgrades a priority. Each year, its Theodore Naish Scout Reservation, established in 1926, and H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, established in 1930, welcome more than 20,000 Scouts and Scout leadership.

International Nonprofit Headquartered in Kansas Seeks Hartsook’s Counsel for Global Mission

Heart to Heart International (Lenexa, Kan.) strengthens communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and administering crisis relief worldwide. Kinetic will assist the organization with its campaign: Empowered to Serve to provide sustainable support to ensure disaster deployment readiness and to secure ongoing donations and distribution of medicines and medical supplies when disaster strikes.

Kansas City Big Brothers Big Sisters Retains Hartsook to Advance Its Fundraising Goals

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City (Kansas City) has earned the reputation as being an important leader in serving youth with programs that: develop leadership skills and character, provide role models and impact youth with life-changing experiences and opportunities. After 105 years serving the Kansas City community, the organization is advancing its mission through a campaign: Our Legacy Our Future. The integrated campaign will support the nonprofit’s goals for capital improvements, program and scholarship reserves and an endowment.

Identification, Death and Bequest Giving

In their article in Psychology and Marketing, “Bequest Giving: Revisiting Donor Motivation with Dimensional Qualitative,” Adrian Sargeant and Jen Shang of the Kinetic Centre for Sustainable Philanthropy consider the impact of bequest giving. Although bequests account for just 8% of total voluntary income, this figure belies their enhanced significance for many organizations. Mann and Sharpe (2004), for example, remind us that it is not unusual for organizations with well-established bequest programs to receive upwards of 30% of their philanthropic support in this form. Ask Kinetic!

Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to We will respond by email and your question may be featured in a future Philanthropy Success.

QUESTION: Our board doesn’t understand why we would hire an outside fundraising consultant when we already have a development department? What would you recommend we tell them?

Just because a nonprofit has a development department doesn’t mean it has successfully undertaken an integrated campaign that raises capital, regular giving and endowment. In contrast, Kinetic has been doing this successfully for over 30 years. We bring a team of professionals with expertise in helping nonprofits of every size and sector… 6,000 nonprofits that have built approximately 40,000 facilities and raised over $231 billion. Our firm doesn’t just talk about saving the world, we are helping to do it. We have built our business on ensuring our clients succeed. The right strategies and advice, applied appropriately, result in greater giving. Tell your board it’s time to call in the experts and tell them to remember: When a fundraising firm offers to help raise money “for less,” be advised that the “less” could mean: “raising less money.”

Strategies for Success:
Lead in Fundraising: Outsource!

Typically, nonprofits are staffed by passionate, tenacious individuals who believe they can pull off the impossible. So, when it comes to fundraising, their first reaction is: “We can do ourselves.” Instead, maybe it’s time to show true leadership in fundraising, and wisely target your time and resources.
