Strategy Alignment and Job Description

JOB TITLE: Major Gift Program Director

REPORTS TO: Chief Knowledge Officer & Business Coach

INN Strategy 1: Be the major gifts “resource center” for nonprofit news
Major Gifts Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Bring entrepreneurial strengths and innovation to bear to create this new entity within INN and the opportunity to influence the trend of journalism, freedom of speech and democracy
  • Serve as a central figure to help sustain and increase bold growth of INN over past 3 years to reach strategic results forecast
  • Develop and deliver the portfolio of programs and services that build and support the capacity of INN members to pursue major gifts regardless of lifecycle stage: startup/early stage, growth and established.
  • Communicate and effectively teach the programs and services necessary to build a major gifts program to development staff within member organizations
  • Provide leadership in enhancing members knowledge regarding key role boards have within resource development activities and how to engage them through best practice application based on their strengths and experiences.
  • Coordinate with INN development staff and contractors to ensure the delivery of programs and services
  • Build major donor cultivation skills and expertise.
  • Help to develop recognition and reward programs for members in order to successfully implement major gifts best practices with documented results
  • Facilitate members knowledge, acquisition and utilization of the appropriate data base tracking system for major donor prospects and recording of secured major gifts
  • Track, document, and promote member success stories within the network and throughout the nonprofit news ecosystem
  • Provide coaching and lead with influence vs authority to help members be successful with effectively identifying, cultivating, soliciting, stewarding and growth among existing and new major gift donors
  • Provide coordination, communications, appropriate reporting, coaching and overall support to Major Gift fundraising activities

INN Strategy 2: Advocate for in building a strong base of major gift prospects and donors who are sustained supporters of the nonprofit news sector
Major Gifts Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Work to facilitate donor awareness with members, INN staff, foundations and other field-building organizations of the nonprofit news sector
  • Coordinate events, public facings, recognitions, speakers and presentations to promote, champion and foster an awareness of major donor potential throughout the nonprofit news sector
  • Work with INN communications director, members and other staff to create “case for support” marketing materials for nonprofit journalism that can be customized by INN members.
  • Work with contractors to build a database of major donor prospects, donor advised funds (DAFs), community and family foundations across the country that complements and supplements the common national databases.

INN Strategy 3: Evangelize donor development to INN members
Major Gifts Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Help fundraising staff to develop a culture of philanthropy and major gifts within the full spectrum of members’ individual organizations
  • Support INN member network in the creation of cultivation strategies for identified major donor prospects.
  • Promote and incentivize membership in Professional Fundraising organizations
  • Provide ongoing education to assist with orienting and encouraging board involvement in the development programs
  • Secure and award grants to incent members toward capacity benchmarks and help them implement overall development best practices as well as for Major Gift fundraising

INN Strategy 4: Build a capable and diverse talent pipeline for nonprofit news sector
Major Gifts Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Develop a resource development talent database for the nonprofit news sector
  • Develop, expand, and formalize an INN development director peer group to accelerate best practices implementation, provide and receive support to one another and benefit from shared learning.
